Воспроизводительное скрещивание можно использовать и для объединения у потомков различных отличительных качеств опушения, например большую длину и повышенную густоту волосяного покрова, или различных показателей опушения и окраски, например, получая длинноволосых соболиных норок пастелевой или голубой окраски.
Тушки зверей направляют на забойный пункт, где сразу же производят съемку с них шкурок. Иногда зверей забивают с расчетом обработки всех полученных шкурок в один день. Если у большей части зверей волосяной покров уже созрел, для того чтобы не передерживать зверей лишнее время, так как при этом расходуются корма, а качество шкурки может снизиться, проводят массовый забой (для постепенной обработки полученных шкурок).
Взрослых зверей необходимо оценивать и по качеству потомства. Это сравнительно легко осуществить, если правильно ведется зоотехнический учет и заполняются журналы выращивания и бонитировки молодняка. Так как в этом журнале весь молодняк сгруппирован по происхождению, сразу видно качество приплода каждого производителя.
Учитывая это, зверей, несущих гены, которые могут оказать летальное действие, целесообразнее разводить, спаривая с особями, не имеющими этих генов. В этом случае выход молодняка не уменьшается, так как вместо гомозигот по доминантному гену увеличится количество молодняка с рецессивными генами, число же гетерозигот, имеющих желательную окраску, останется тем же.
