Чтобы стимулировать течку повышением активности зверей и своевременно, а также с меньшими затратами труда выявлять состояние половой охоты, во многих хозяйствах проводят групповой гон.
У серебристых песцов основным показателем также является чистота окраски, но, кроме того, учитывают и интенсивность развития серебристости. 5балльную оценку получают звери с опушением чистого цвета или с легким коричневатым налетом на брюшке и лапах. Интенсивность платинового (серебристого) волоса должна быть большой, равномерной по всей спине и боках.
У голубых песцов неоднократно наблюдалось рождение беломордых особей, то есть зверей с белой пятнистостью на морде (белая полоса от кончика носа до затылка), шее (в виде ошейника), груди и животе, подобной белой пятнистости беломордых лисиц. Это доминантная окраска, и подобные мутации возникали неоднократно в ряде зверосовхозов.
В Советском Союзе клеточным разведением песцов начали заниматься несколько позже, чем другими видами зверей. Вначале были только островные хозяйства на Командорских островах и о. Кильдин, где зимой песцов, обитавших на воле, подкармливали и часть поголовья забивали.
Рост и развитие щенков. Выращивание молодняка. Первые 2,5 — 3 недели щенки питаются только молоком матери. До 2недельного возраста они совершенно беспомощны, глаза у них закрыты, зубов еще нет; передвигаются они ползком. Глаза у щенков открываются на 1417й день; примерно в это же время у них начинают прорезываться зубы.
