Хорьки по физиологии и характеру питания близки к норкам. Нормы кормления хорьков еще детально не разработаны, поэтому в большинстве хозяйств их кормят по рационам для норок или песцов. От хорьков получают в год два приплода. Беременность может быть й в марте—апреле (первое щенение), и в июле—августе (второе щенение).

Сезонные изменения обмена веществ у хорьков еще не изучались, поэтому в нормах предусматривается потребность в энергии и питательных веществах только на тот или иной физиологический период, независимо от того, в какие месяцы он проходит. Примерные нормы кормления взрослых хорьков приведены в статье под номером 31.

По рационам для лактирующих самок, а затем по нормам (статье под номером 32). Количество белка доводят до 7,58 г, увеличивая количество жира до 5,0 г на 100 ккал корма. Проведенные опыты показали возможность сокращения количества белка до 6,5 г при увеличении количества жира до 5,8 г.

Молодняк, полученный от второго щенения, отсаживают от самок в сентябре—октябре и кормят по нормам молодняка первых пометов. В связи с пониженной температурой воздуха в этот период необходимо следить за ростом щенков, проводить контрольные взвешивания, учитывать поедаемость корма.
