Сроки созревания волосяного покрова у молодняка зависят от времени его рождения. К 40—45дневному возрасту щенки имеют волосяной покров, по характеру и окраске приближающийся к этим показателям у взрослых зверей. Смена летнего опушения на зимнее у щенков, родившихся в первую половину года, начинается с середины октября, примерно в 4,5 месяца.

Полное развитие опушения заканчивается в конце ноября начале декабря, в 67 месяцев. В это же время созревает зимнее опушение и у взрослых зверей. У молодняка из вторых пометов, родившихся во второй половине года, формирование зимнего опушения проходит со второй половины декабря и заканчивается в феврале в 5—5,5 месяца. Это связано с тем, что у них волосяной покров растет быстрее, чем у ранорожденных щенков. Но количество волос на единицу площади у позднорожденного молодняка меньше, чем у ранорожденного, а дефектность опушения больше.

На искусственное изменение режима освещения щенки первого и второго пометов реагируют поразному: сокращение силы освещения и длины светового дня с середины июля у 3—4месячных щенков из первых пометов ускоряет созревание опушения на 3 недели; у зверей того же возраста из вторых пометов изменение освещения влияния не оказывает.

При естественном созревании опушения забой молодняка из первых пометов и выбракованных взрослых проводят в декабре, из вторых пометов — в феврале.
