Составляя рацион, прежде всего учитывают биологический период и качество (полноценность) животных кормов, которые будут служить источником белка, и решают, какое количество протеина должно быть дано на 100 ккал. Соответственно этому определяют и количество жира. Подсчитав количество энергии, которая будет получена с протеином и жиром, находят, сколько ее нужно дать с БЭВ, чтобы обеспечить 100 ккал в порции, а из этого сколько граммов безазотистых экстрактивных веществ должно быть дано.

Имея эти цифры, приступают к составлению рациона. Обычно прежде всего выписывают те корма, которые обязательно должны быть даны как источники витаминов дрожжи, рыбий жир, иногда сочные корма. Подсчитывают содержание в них белка, жира и углеводов. Так как в кормах животного происхождения углеводов практически нет и их звери получают с растительными кормами, в частности с зерном, определяют, какое количество последнего должно быть дано для обеспечения потребности в БЭВ и сколько в заданном количестве будет содержаться белка и жира. Учитывая количество последних и в уже выписанных кормах, определяют, какие корма животного происхождения и в каком количестве должны быть включены в рацион.

При определении их ассортимента учитывают необходимость включения в рацион отдельных видов (например, печени как источника витаминов, костей как источника кальция и фосфора и др.), потребность зверей в полноценном белке и возможности хозяйства. Часть белка может быть дана с молочными кормами, введение которых в отдельные периоды (лактации, молодняку в раннем возрасте) особо желательна. Выявляют стоимость отдельных кормов с тем, чтобы за счет более дешевых снизить расход дорогих и уменьшить расходы на кормление зверей.

Определив, сколько будет дано тех или иных кормов животного происхождения для полного обеспечения зверей белком, подсчитывают содержание в них жира и энергии и общее количество этих веществ в рационе. Если оказалось, что жира в рационе меньше, чем нужно зверям, то добавляют "свободный" (не входящий в состав какоголибо корма) жир или соответственно перераспределяют ассортимент мясных и рыбных кормов. В заключение подсчитывают общую питательность рациона. При расчете на "порцию" она должна составлять 100 ккал.
