Основная задача племенной работы в звероводстве получение максимального количества высококачественных шкурок зверей при минимальных затратах. Она затрудняется многочисленностью селекционируемых признаков: качество шкурки зависит от структурных показателей опушения, ее окраски и размеров; количество получаемой пушнины от воспроизводительных способностей зверей и жизнеспособности молодняка. В свою очередь, перечисленные здесь укрупненные показатели складываются из многих более мелких, в большинстве случаев наследуемых независимо. Так, качество опушения определяется длиной, толщиной ости и подпуши, густотой волос всех категорий, количественным соотношением кроющих и пуховых волос; окраска опушения основной окраской ости и подпуши, а также их оттенками. Конечный показатель воспроизводительной способности количество молодняка, выращенного на каждую самку основного стада, зависит от удельного веса самок, принесших приплод, их плодовитости, сохранности молодняка и т. п.

Так как эффективно вести работу, учитывая все показатели, очень трудно, оценка проводится по комплексу показателей укрупненного признака, то есть оценивается качество опушения или окраска в целом. Наличие отдельных нежелательных показателей (например, недостаточная густота или длина волосяного покрова) снижает общую оценку.

К факторам, облегчающим племенную работу в звероводстве, относят многоплодие зверей и возможность определения у потомства качества шкурки в первый же год жизни (до получения от родителей второго приплода), а его воспроизводительной способности (кроме соболей) по достижении годовалого возраста.
