Блеск волосяного покрова зависит от строения кутикулы, ее состояния и от смазки волос. Нормально развитые сальные железы постоянно смазывают волосы. Весной же деятельность желез сокращается, в результате чего опушение тускнеет. Подобное же явление может наблюдаться при нарушении деятельности желез в результате заболевания зверя или неправильного кормления.

Окраска волосяного покрова слагается из сочетания цвета кроющих и вершин пуховых волос. Подругому окрашенные направляющие волосы могут создавать "вуаль", а цвет верхушек пуховых волос придавать шкурке определенный тон, или, по выражению товароведов, "воду": при коричневых верхушках появляется "красноводность", при голубых — "голубоводность".

Носкость шкурки определяется прочностью отдельных волос, степенью их связи с кожей, а также степенью покрытия подпуши направляющим волосом. Чем толще корковый слой, тем прочнее будут волосы и тем позднее при носке начнется их разрушение. Пуховые волосы менее прочны, чем кроющие, и при удалении последних, как указывалось выше, носкость шкурки снижается. На шкурке, полученной от зверя, у которого должна начаться или уже началась линька, связь волос с кожей менее прочная, чем у зверей, у которых еще не закончился рост волос и они связаны с волосяным сосочком. При повреждении луковицы во время обработки шкурки прочность волосяного покрова намного снижается. Различные способы выделки шкурок также могут оказать влияние на этот показатель. Наконец, носкость шкурки зависит от вида зверя, что объясняется особенностями строения его волосяного покрова.
