В Советском Союзе обитает несколько видов сурков. Наиболее перспективным для разведения считают степного сурка, или байбака (Marmota bobak Mull). Байбаки крупные (длина тела 4060 см, масса осенью в среднем 56 кг, а у отдельных особей до 9 кг), плодовитые (средний размер помета 8 щенков), характеризуются густым опушением песчаножелтого цвета.

Сурки впадают в глубокую спячку, при которой температура их тела снижается до 8—15 С. В зависимости от условий продолжительность спячки колеблется: она начинается с понижением температуры и в засушливых районах может продолжаться до 9 месяцев, в течение которых зверь ничего не ест.

Спаривания наблюдаются после окончания спячки и могут быть в конце февраля — марте. Повидимому, сроки спаривания могут колебаться в зависимости от климатических условий. Беременность продолжается около месяца. Новорожденные щенки слепые, не имеют зубов, их масса 25—30 г. Глаза прорезаются у щенков месячного возраста. Лактация продолжается 3540 дней. Молодняк достигает половой зрелости в возрасте 2—3 лет, и размножаются сурки до 6—10 лет. Продолжительность жизни может быть до 15 лет.

Шкурку хорошего качества можно получить от сурков, достигших 1,5летнего возраста и старше — перед началом спячки. У молодняка текущего года рождения в это время волосяной покров еще не достигает полного развития.

При забое осенью, кроме шкурки, получают до 1,5 кг жира для парфюмерной промышленности и 1,52 кг пищевого мяса.

Питаются сурки зелеными частями растений, корнеплодами, зерном. В рацион добавляют рыбную или мясокостную муку, поваренную соль, витаминные препараты (особенно весной).
Пока все особенности разведения этого вида не изучены и трудно говорить о целесообразности его клеточного разведения.
