Состояние щенков может быть неудовлетворительным из-за нехватки материнского молока. Чтобы установить это, осматривают самку. При нормальном молокоотделении опушения вокруг сосков нет, молочные железы хорошо развиты, но не слишком упруги, при надавливании из сосков выделяются струйки молока.

Иногда соски бывают скрыты в опушении и при нормальном отделении молока щенки не могут им воспользоваться. В этом случае надо осторожно выщипать (подстричь) волосы вокруг сосков. У некоторых самок молочные железы бывают загрубевшими из-за того, что молоко появилось до родов и щенки его не отсасывали. В этом случае при избытке молока щенки могут погибнуть от голода, так как молочные железы переполнены, кожа на них натянута и щенок не может захватить сосок. У таких самок необходимо сдоить лишнее молоко, слегка массируя молочные железы. Нередко молочные железы у самок развиты слабо, при сдаивании молоко появляется отдельными каплями или соски остаются сухими. От такой самки щенков надо отсадить. Если молоко у нее все же есть, ее можно "раздоить", подсадив к ней 2—3 щенков 1,5—2недельного возраста.
Иногда наблюдается непроходимость сосков; она бывает врожденной, но может появиться и в результате повреждения сосков щенками в предыдущем году. При непроходимости сосков щенков надо отсадить.

Слабым щенкам, которых пришлось взять от самки, надо дать раствор аскорбиновой кислоты и подкормить их. Чаще всего проводят "ручную подкормку": самкумать, если у нее есть молоко, или другую, достаточно молочную, кладут на стол, завязав ей морду, чтобы она не могла укусить, и к соскам подкладывают щенков. Если щенки не пытаются сосать — им сдаивают немного молока в рот.

Если щенки сосали плохо, их помещают в "инкубатор" и через 2—3 ч возобновляют подкормку. Если же щенки сосали хорошо — их можно оставить с матерью, посадив в домик, наблюдая за поведением самки и состоянием щенков. Если щенков держат без самки — перед каждой подкормкой надо сделать им массаж брюшка от грудной клетки к хвосту и удалить появляющиеся кал и мочу. Пока щенки питаются молоком матери, они не могут сами калиться и мочиться, и самка регулярно вылизывает их. Это обеспечивает и чистоту в гнезде.
